I went to Gatlinburg for my spring break this year and was able to get tons of video. This is just a small bit compared to like the whole 1 hour plus video I recorded. I saw 6 black bears, about 4-6 deer, tons of wild turkey, and some cool birds. If you go farther east into the Smoky Mountains then you can see some elk and other animals. As or the editing, I did some minor editing in After Effects CS5 like fish-eye lens and some minor CC, but that’s all I really did to it. Hope you enjoyed!

Did you know there are no Smokey Mountain cabins for holiday rentals inside the huge Smokey Mountains National Park – except one! It is called Lecanto Lodge. Even although the National Park Service Leconte cabin is called a lodge, it also includes rental log cabins. These are the only Cabin rentals in Gatlinburg for vacation inside the national park.

To get there, do you just hop in your car and drive up to the front door? No way! There is no road to these Smokey Mountain rental cabins. If you want to stay there, the only way in is by hiking! Talk about Smokey Mountain secluded cabins – it is a hike of over 5 miles if you are up to it. Lots of folks do just that, as this Smokey stack cabins capability fills up fast throughout the summer. Not only does it fill up fast, you may have to wait months to get a cabin condition.

Located at more than 6,500 feet elevation, these Smokies rental cabins are very popular. Prepare for a sponge bath. While there is operation water for the toilets, there is no electricity. Kerosene lanterns will provide you with light. You will not be blow-drying your hair or watching reruns while here. It is life to some extent like it used to be many generations ago.

These Smokey Mountain cabins only have a capacity of up to fifty guests per night housed in either handcrafted log cabins or group resting lodges. The cabins have upper and lesser double bunk beds, which are great for two couples or a family of four or five persons. Each of the larger cabin lodges can sleep from ten to thirteen persons.

For your Leconte stay, make sure you bring sturdy shoes that you have already broken in. Include more than one change of socks in case your feet get wet. Layered, inconsequential clothing will give you the flexibility to add more or take it off as temperatures change. A warm sweater or jacket is wise and a lightweight raincoat or poncho is totally essential. Nature shows no pity for those ill-equipped for the rapid changes in weather. Summer nights can dip to 40 degrees or lower, while in spring and fall, night temperatures can drop into the teens with snowfall.

Susan Whitaker, the director of the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development was on hand Tuesday at the Ole Smokey Distillery to dedicate the Rocky Top Trail. The trail is the 14th of 16 trails developed to get the tourist off the beaten paths so that they may enjoy other aspects of the Volunteer State along the back roads.

The Rocky Top Trail is the result of a partnership between multiple state agencies and city and county officials. The end product is a brand new tourism asset – a 282 mile trail made up of sites and attractions in Knox, Sevier, Blount, Cocke, Jefferson, Loudon and Monroe counties showcasing East Tennessee’s history, culture, landscape, music and cuisine.

Executive Director Vicki Simms of the Gatlinburg Chamber of Commerce hosted the event. Both Commissioner Whitaker and Assistant Commissioner Toks Omishakin, Tennessee Department of Transportation, made special remarks. Bluegrass band, Monroeville, performed, including a rousing rendition of “Rocky Top,” which has been adopted as one of the state’s official songs, to close the ceremony.

“The trails initiative is one of the most comprehensive programs ever to be launched from our department,” said Whitaker. “We know millions of visitors are traveling to this region every year. Our goal with the Rocky Top Trail is to encourage travelers to get off the beaten path and explore some of Tennessee’s hidden gems. We want more visitors, staying longer and spending more in Tennessee.”

The trail officially begins in Gatlinburg at the Gatlinburg/Great Smoky Mountains National Park Welcome Center where guests can pick up brochures, maps and coupons before heading out to discover Tennessee’s back roads. Included on the trail is the Gatlinburg Inn where the song “Rocky Top” was written in 1967 by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant during their stay at the hotel. Visitors can stop in the hotel lobby and pick up brochures and see artifacts relating to the region’s colorful history. The song became popular at the University of Tennessee’s sporting events since the early 1970s.

Knoxville Tourism and Sports Corporation’s Knoxville Visitor Center on Gay Street is also a primary trail hub. However, visitors can choose to begin their trip at any point along the path. Once on the trail, travelers can explore 282-miles through East Tennessee.

Appalachian arts and crafts are abundant on the Rocky Top Trail. Visitors can hone in on their artistic skills with staff and artists at the Arrowmont School of the Arts and Crafts, or visit Great Smoky Arts and Crafts Community, the nation’s largest organization of independent artisans with more than 100 members. Spirit of the Hand in Dandridge features the work of 150 artisans from around the region and country.

On Rocky Top, travelers can explore Greats Smoky Mountains National Park, catch an exhilarating class three or four ride on the rapids of the Pigeon River in nearby Hartford; see the beautiful scenery from up above on one of the many zip lines in the area or for a cooler experience, go below into Forbidden or Tuckaleechee Caverns.

The decision that is the hardest for me to make each vacation, is where we will stay. Choosing the right location with amenities that will entertain the children is very important.

The first time we went to Gatlinburg for a family vacation, I hadn’t been in that area for at least ten years. Even back then – I wasn’t paying attention to the local resorts, cabins or hotels.

On the advice of friends, we went down there without making any type of reservations. The time of year that we traveled, we were told would be the best for receiving a last minute discount so the hotel could fill the room. It ended up being a fantastic idea! A few places I may have chosen while browsing photographs and sites online – proved not to be the best place for families to stay. A place I never looked into ended up being our choice.

We ended up staying at Marriott’s Fairfield Inn and Suites.

It was a beautiful little setting. It wasn’t high up in the mountains, just nestled right at its base. It was still pushed back enough to where you didn’t feel that you were right in the middle of Gatlinburg.

The cutest little trolley would pick you up right in the parking lot of the Fairfield Inn and take you through town. This was a nice option as parking in Gatlinburg is scarce!

The kids loved the little pool with twisty slide. I think that was probably their favorite part of the entire vacation.

Attendants at the front desk were always very helpful and friendly. That was a nice touch for our first family vacation. I was nervous enough to take my kids hours away from home for the first time. Traveling just isn’t something we get to do as often as we would like. It was nice to have smiling faces at the pool, front desk and breakfast bar each day.

If you decide on a hotel during your next visit in Gatlinburg, be sure to check them out!

Hey Everyone! We are back from our week long vacation at Gatlinburg! You didn’t know we were even gone? Well, that’s because my cop husband likes to make sure we keep everything hush hush… so over dramatic I know :)

Since I have a ton of things to fill you in on, all posts this week will be focused around what we did on our Gatlinburg vacation! I hope you are ready for several picture heavy posts to come!

One of the main attractions of our vacation was time spent together at our cabin. We stayed in a cabin called “Above the Treetops” at Galtinburg Falls Resort and it was pretty nice! It was seriously as big as our house! One of my worries was that we would spend all this money on a nice cabin and then never even enjoy it, but this was not the case. We spent lots of time taking in the views from the cabin, napping, cooking, and of course drinking!

Of course we brought Remington along and he was very excited to get his vacation started!
Above are some pictures of where we stayed!

We spent the mornings relaxing, taking in the views and of course drinking coffee!

Some afternoons and evenings where spent hanging out in or around the cabin and on our decks overlooking the mountains!

Then of course there was our evening beers and Hurricane Alleys (thanks for the secret recipe Boo)

And did I mention the amazing views we had from our cabin? Oh I did? Well, I’ll say it again… they were awesome!

Gatlinburg Vacation 2012 will continue tomorrow… stay tuned in!
